Christ's Kingdom is of Heaven and is not advanced by the means that earthly kingdoms are advanced - by means that will fail or pass away. Instead, it is brought and advanced by the Word of God.
The rulers of God's people handed Him over because they loved the kingdom of the world more than the Kingdom of Heaven.
Even the earthly ruler declared Christ to be without guilt, yet he hands the Lord of Heaven over to be killed. Christ came to reveal the Kingdom of Heaven on earth and then qualify and transfer people into it. He would do this by being lifted up on a cross in the place of all those who believe in the Good News of His salvation - bringing them into His eternal kingdom.
